Call for Chapters!

Using Popular Culture in the Classroom: Teaching Traditional Skill Sets with Popular Culture Artifacts

Editors: Laura Getty, University of North Georgia (lgetty@ung.edu) and Josef Vice, Purdue University Global (jvice@purdueglobal.edu)

Deadline for submitting chapter proposals (400 words): August 1, 2026

Notification of acceptance: ongoing, no later than September 1, 2026

Provisional deadline for essay draft submission (approximately 5,000-8,000 words, including teaching resources): December 31, 2026

Proposals are sought for essays for a volume that critically examines using popular culture to teach traditional skill sets in the classroom. A wide range of voices and perspectives would be particularly valuable and welcome. We welcome chapters that address skill sets across disciplines, especially skill sets in STEM courses. We have submitted a formal proposal to McFarland Press, and they have already expressed interest in the book.

Chapters should explain how instructors can use popular culture artifacts in specific classroom assignments in place of and/or to supplement traditionally used materials. They should include one or more pop culture artifacts from any medium: from film, TV, and literature to music, sports, and video games, plus many other options. Specify the skill sets that are taught, with examples and explanations. Chapters should also include resources (for example, class discussion questions) that could be used to support classroom instruction.

Submissions: Submit your proposal and short bio no later than August 1, 2026 to both lgetty@ung.edu and jvice@purdueglobal.edu
