Newberry Workshop: Medieval Afterlives

This workshop explores the long reach of the Middle Ages into the present through the editions, versions, and reimaginings of medieval culture produced through the early modern period and into the modern day. Through discussions, group work, and hands-on activities with Newberry collection items, participants will better understand what post-medieval manifestations of texts, artworks, and other objects can teach us about the medieval past. In this way, we will also consider how the medieval can inform our present and guide our future.

This workshop is free and open to all, but space is limited. Priority will be given to qualified applicants from CRS Consortium institutions. Consortium members may also be eligible to receive a CRS Consortium Grant to cover the costs of attending the workshop.

DESCRIPTION

This workshop forms part of a series of programming exploring the future of medieval studies to mark the Centennial of the Medieval Academy of America in 2025, which is co-organized by Shirin Fozi (Metropolitan Museum of Art), Lynley Herbert (Walters Art Museum), and Christopher Fletcher (Newberry Library).

MAA Graduate Student Committee Webinar: Medievalists Beyond the Academy

Join the MAA Graduate Student Committee on March 29th, 2023 at 7 pm EST for a panel on employment for medievalists outside of what we traditionally envision as the “academy” (university-based research and teaching). From grant writing and archival management to secondary education and academic publishing, our participants represent a wide range of experience levels and professional opportunities. In this conversation moderated by GSC members Kersti Francis and Will Beattie, panelists will share their pathways from their PhD to their current position, followed by a live Q and A with questions submitted by our audience. Thank you for participating in the 2022 International Congress on Medieval Studies.



We encourage you to consider nominating yourself to serve as a contributing reviewer of proposals for Sponsored and Special Sessions for the 58th and 59th congresses (2023 and 2024). We very much value the contributions these reviewers make in helping the Program Committee with its deliberations, and reviewers receive gratis Congress registration in the years that they serve.



The body of contributing reviewers for sponsored and special sessions comprises ten reviewers, five serving in the first year of two-year terms and five serving in the second year of two-year terms, all selected by a committee of the Board of the Medieval Institute from among self-nominated volunteers.

The MLA International Bibliography is accepting applications for three-year field-bibliography fellowships. MLA field bibliographers examine scholarly materials and submit bibliographic and indexing information for citations in the bibliography. Open to all MLA members, including graduate students, the 2022 fellowships will run from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2025.

Field bibliographers perform a valuable service for the profession and receive institutional recognition while deepening their knowledge of the field as well as their research skills. The MLA provides materials and training and waives registration fees for fellows attending training sessions at the MLA convention. On completion of the fellowship, fellows receive a $500 stipend and a certificate at the convention awards ceremony.
