GMTV on DVD: King Arthur and the Knights of Justice

Image Entertainment has announced the March 2nd release of the complete series King Arthur and the Knights of Justice, an animated series that aired for two seasons in syndication during the early 1990s. The premise of the series is that Morgana has imprisoned King Arthur and his Knights, and Merlin and the Lady of the Round Table summon a team of college football players to serve as their surrogates. Each episode pits these new knights against Morgana and her army of Warlords.

A trailer for the DVD set, featuring the series's opening and several minutes of the first episode, has been posted on Amazon.com.

Given the proximity to Halloween, we are especially interested in proposals devoted to the topic “Monstrous Medievalisms: Investigations of the Medieval in Gothic and Horror Narratives” for a session “Monstrous Medievalisms 2010" to be sponsored by the Society for the Study of Popular Culture and the Middle Ages.

Proposals are invited from scholars of all levels and papers will be presented under the Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Legend Area (http://sf-fantasy-legend.blogspot.com/). Presentations will be limited to 15-20 minutes in length and may address any aspect of the multi-media genres of science fiction, fantasy, and/or legends in popular culture.

The Northeast Popular Culture Association (NEPCA) is a regional affiliate of the American Culture Association and the Popular Culture Association. NEPCA is an association of scholars in New England and New York, organized in 1974 at the University of Rhode Island. We reorganized and incorporated in Boston in 1992. The purpose of this professional association is to encourage and assist research, publication, and teaching on popular culture and culture studies topics by scholars in the northeast region of the United States. By bringing together scholars from various disciplines, both academic and non-academic people, we foster interdisciplinary research and learning.

New Journal: postmedieval: a journal of medieval cultural studies

A much belated post:

Palgrave Macmillan has recently launched a new journal of Medieval Studies called postmedieval: a journal of medieval cultural studies. The journal appears to have developed from the investigations of the BABEL Working Group, the In the Middle blog, and the contributors to the collection Cultural Studies of the Modern Middle Ages. Collectively, they seem, in general, to have an ambivalent attitude towards popular medievalism vacillating between fascination and horror, but the new journal has potential.


Here are the details from their web site:

postmedieval: a journal of medieval cultural studies is a cross-disciplinary, peer-reviewed journal in medieval studies that aims to bring the medieval and modern into productive critical relation. The journal will work to develop a present-minded medieval studies in which contemporary events, issues, ideas, problems, objects, and texts serve as triggers for critical investigations of the Middle Ages. Further, we are concerned to illuminate the deep historical structures–mental, linguistic, social, cultural, aesthetic, religious, political, sexual, and the like–that underlie contemporary thought and life, and therefore, we are also interested in attending to the question of the relation of the medieval to the modern (and vice versa) in different times and places. We want to also demonstrate the important value of medieval studies and the longest possible historical perspectives to the ongoing development of contemporary critical and cultural theories that remain under-historicized. Finally, we will advocate for and support the continuing development, from any and all disciplinary directions, of historicist, materialist, comparatist, and theoretical approaches to the subjects of the Middle Ages.

CFP: Arthurian Villains in Film/Television/Electronic Games (1st Round 4/1/10; Kalamazoo 5/12-15/11)

The Alliance for the Promotion of Research on the Villains of the Matter of Britain, in conjunction with the Society for the Study of Popular Culture and the Middle Ages, will be proposing a set of panels for the 2011 International Congress on Medieval Studies (Western Michigan University, 12-15 May 2011) on the topic of Arthurian Villains in Film/Television/Electronic Games in celebration of the 30th anniversary of John Boorman's Excalibur (1981). Prior to submitting our session proposal, we would like to gauge interest in the topic and appreciate brief proposals and a short CV from potential presenters.

MCP: Muppets and Medievalism from Boom Studies

Comic book publisher Boom Studios has recently published a four-part series called Muppet Robin Hood that recasts the Muppets as characters from the Robin Hood legend. The series (also available as a collected edition) can be ordered direct from the publisher. A forthcoming series called Muppet King Arthur is due out this month, though Boom Studios does not yet have any information online about this series.

David Chauvel, Jérôme Lereculey, and Jean-Luc Simon's graphic album series Arthur, Une Épopée Celtique is finally available in English from Welsh publisher Dalen. The series was originally published in French and has been translated into multiple languages, include German and Welsh (the last also from Dalen).

Published in nine volumes by Delcourt from 1999-2006, Arthur, Une Épopée Celtique offers a complete retelling of the Arthurian legend in a world filled with magic. Author David Chauvel is Series Director at the French publishing house Delcourt, and has collaborated with illustrator Jérôme Lereculey since the 1970s. As Celtic Bretons, both have been drawn to recount the long ignored, and ancient Welsh version of the Arthur story in a magnificent and detailed series of graphic novels.
